About

Good Eating logoWelcome to Good Eating!

GoodEating.ca is a practical food site for people who don’t need a lifestyle guru, just someone who gets it when you’re looking to cook like real people actually do for the most part, on a budget and not like a chef, need a tip or a trick with things food or food-adjacent, need nutritional facts or ingredient lists of products they buy, or they’ve tossed the box and forgot how long to microwave those Pizza Pockets, or simply can’t read and/or make out the label.

This site was born from one simple frustration:
Shoot, how do I prepare this again, I tossed the box? Argh!
Whether it’s a frozen meal, a bag of perogies, or baby’s new favorite snack — if you toss the box, the info goes with it. And that’s annoying.

So I started saving them.
Then I started photographing them.
Now I’m sharing them… here.

Who Good Eating Is For

  • You live on a budget and want realistic meal ideas

  • You eat things like Kraft Dinner, bologna sandwiches, or instant noodles … and you’re not ashamed

  • You want easy-to-find instructions for everyday grocery items

  • You don’t want to scroll through someone’s tragic love story just to find oven temps

Basically: real food – real fast – no fluff

Why Me?

I’m a mom – a new grandma – a lifelong food realist.

I know what it’s like to juggle life – money – picky eaters – a grocery store that keeps moving sh*t around.

The little tips and tricks I share? Many of them aren’t mine … they were passed down to me from my grandmother, Jonée, a sharp, witty Scottish-Irish lady who believed that a dull knife just needed the bottom of a mug and that toast was the greatest invention of all-time… for reals, she had a major tea and toast habit! I learned by watching – listening – doing… and now I get to pass those gems forward.

I’m just trying to help people not mess up and have to toss perfectly good food because they can’t remember if the oven was supposed to be at 375 or 425 and/or for how long.

Wait — Are You a Bot?

Nope – but I do get this a lot… 😀
My family even calls ChatGPT my boyfriend because I say “HE said…” when referring to AI help. (And no, I have not yet given him a name yet…)

Truth is, I do use AI (ChatGPT) as my assistant. He helps me format – fact-check – occasionally remind me how to spell “elipses” (ellipses). But the stories? The voice? The little jokes? That’s all me … hyphens, Grandma Jonée tricks, ellipseseeses and all.

I write like I talk…
>Sometimes that’s with hyphens (mostly when I’m texting).
>Sometimes it’s dot-dot-dot (when I’m on desktop).
>Sometimes it’s both… cuz well – cuz I can! 😛
That’s not AI — that’s just me. (This too, would normally be deemed an AI tell… lol again… I, in fact, wrote myself and on purpose! LOL)

So, What Can You Expect at Good Eating?

  • Photos of food labels, ingredients, and nutritional info (so you don’t have to dig through recycling)
  • Tips and tricks from 45+ years of real-life cooking… yup.. started at age 7
  • Food reviews for all ages (my grandson is a taste-tester)
  • Budget-conscious meals that don’t pretend you shop at Whole Foods or Metro or Loblaw’s (pick your expensivest grocer store)
  • And yes – sometimes – just silly observations about life – bologna – things that fall behind the stove.
